Writer Resources

Brandon Sanderson, author of Mistborn and other fantasy series, has a great lecture series online. His entire BYU writing course is posted on youtube for free. How awesome is that? Brandon writes fantasy, but everyone can benefit from his fantastic advice. Anytime I get stuck in my writing, I go here and watch a lesson or two. It gets me through the rough patches every time.

Once Upon a Keyboard is a great website to explore and learn about a variety of writing topics, including such things as:
  • The Writer's Life
  • Prewriting
  • Crafting the Manuscript
  • Editing
  • Publishing
Also, I should mention that one of the contributing authors is a wonderful friend of mine, Jennie Stevens, who happens to be an editor for Precision Editing Group. She knows her stuff. This is an amazing resource. You should check it out.

  • Writing the Breakout Novel by Donald Mass
  • The Making of a Story: The Norton Guide to Creative Writing by Alice LaPlante
  • On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King
  • The Weekend Novelist by Robert J. Ray
  • Sometimes the Magic Works: Lessons From a Writing Life by Terry Brooks
  • Thanks, But This Isn't For Us: A (Sort Of) Compassionate Guide to Why Your Writing is Being Rejected by Jessica Page Morrell
  • Snoopy's Guide to the Writing Life by Barnaby Conrad and Monte Shultz

  • Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White
  • Eats Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss

I'm always on the lookout for more writing resources, so if you have a favorite resource, please share it in the comments.  :)
